The Strollers first appeared on the scene in 1932 when two Columbia High School teachers turned their dream of a community theatre into a reality. The name was derived from the term used to describe early English troops of traveling thespians. Formally incorporated in 1936, the group was founded with the intent of creating "an organization to advance the art of the theat ... and to provide an opportunity for artistic and dramatic education and enjoyment for its members and the community."

Since 1989 The Strollers has been the Resident Theatre Company at the Burgdorff Cultural Center in the heart of historic Maplewood Village. This lovely French provincial building, once home to a Christian Science Church, dates back to 1913. Since taking up residence, The Strollers has undertaken some major renovations to the building interior, including building a stage, installing lighting and sound systems, and constructing a handicapped-accessible bathroom and sprinkler system.

The Strollers has garnered top recognition from both the New Jersey Theater League (twice winning the coveted Walter Cox Award) and The Bigbee Awards (receiving several prized Golden Seals).
